a note...
This is a nuanced position, so the words may be strike you a certain way, realize that particular words in this context are not intended to shun the validity of the principled definitions they uphold. Rather they are to distinguish this assertion, as unique from the measure of the weight they contain.
I previously typed a post entitled Insidious
It was upon reflecting on the this passage, that it occurred to me that there is a very dangerous thing that we do in our culture. It creates a needless hierarchy which stifles innovation and unseats creativity.
Yes, yes, yes
There is the time honored tome of...
"You must fight, and die, for what you want!" or
"How bad do you want it?" or
"You have passion, when it is all you have left."
Mind you these are all true, time-honored and tested ...until they are not
Failure is definitely on the road to success.
Success being defined differently by every age, generation and person.
However, there is this lacking I bear witness to in our culture.
It is dangerous, because it is disguised as pragmatism, practical-thinking and reason.
There are those who would have otherwise developed, supported or been a contributing member to a pioneering group, and was turned away by your disbelief. They were on that fine line of "Do" or "Do not" and your bullshit threw them off. They are not a seasoned athlete, trained to handle the disruption of the crowd. No, they are a normal person with doubts, self-hate and past failures brought present. Then you waltz in, a trusted source and say the most damaging of things...
"No, you can't"
"Nobody does it that way"
"But, what-about..."
The explorer, innovator, creator, maverick has a table full of their own shit they have to overlook and the table legs are weak, that table-top is porous, and it's not holding up that weight well. They need you to help, support and unload some of that doubt, self-hate and past-made-present failure. They need you.
They cannot do it without you, and nor should they. We are a communal, social and connection-driven species. Which means we rely on the opinions, views and insights of those we care most about to drive us, when we a losing a fight.
Realize that, "Lie down", merely means that they will in fact, "Lie down".
They won't stop, at least we hope... They will lose precious time.
When they do come back, bigger, faster and stronger they will remember who added shit to the table and who supported when it was it's weakest.
In word and deed, they remember it all.
This is no threat.
After being beaten, most never rise again.
Their idea, their vision, dies in the casket with their body never to see the light of day.
That is the most dangerous thing, the idea, the vision, the solutions that died in hospitals, houses and fields because when a person need you most, you were busy being right - instead of being the support.
This is very damning, and yes it prompts a conversation about this process being beneficial and correct in order to build a tough, thick, skin which is necessary. True.
However, a word about trauma. There is trauma that is beneficial and there is trauma that is detrimental. Working out is beneficial. You train, you get sore, you adapt, you train, you get less sore.
Car Accidents are detrimental. You get injured, you recover, and you're never quite the same again.
This is not damning of the detractors, you will always be right ...until you are not
This is a plea...
We need you.
We benefit from you.
Much like you need us.
So, please, please, please... Believe in us, when we do not.
Because.
We believe in you, when we can not.
...people need people to be better.
