So what I need you to do is select a task that you can do, expertly.
It's what you are known for doing well.
As a matter of fact, your friends, family and even colleagues will contact you for this thing exclusively.
They wouldn't even... Well, you get the point.
You are good at this thing.
The next step.
What I need you to do is select a task that you cannot do well, if at all.
You are actually known for being particularly bad at it.
As a matter of fact, your friends, family and even colleagues will avoid asking you to do this exclusively.
They wouldn't even... Well, you get that point.
You are quite terrible at this thing.
I have a catalog of things that I truly dislike, and the next statement is one of them.
"Don't say you can't...", followed by the quasi-motivational banter which makes you feel like shit and manipulates you into trying the awful thing.
I get it.
I am with you.
I am on your side.
You can't do it... You cannot do that... You can do other things, and this is not apart of the can pile.
In the "Warehouse of Can" there is no inventory of this task, it is unavailable, it cannot be done.
Well... [stretching out this word for effect]
There is will.
Determinism, fatalism and presumptions aside.
You can, will-it.
You can muster the will to pursue that in-which you have no skill.
You can do that.
This has no bearing on the quality of what you will execute.
Yet you will execute that task.
Therefore you will have done it.
There is a thin line between can't and won't.
That line they reside on is a fragile lie.
Like most lies they are based on a fragmented truth.
That truth is you won't because you can't, you can't so you don't, and you don't so you cannot.
Where does this leave us?
I will not.
I cannot.
I won't.
I can't.
Learn.
The ability that is time honored, and tested, is your ability to learn.
Your capacity to learn.
You need proof, you are here now, reading this essay, in a language you could not understand when you first started. You merely understood pitch and tone.
Start from where you are, now.
You are not the reluctant prodigy, you are a misshaped stone which must be chiseled, carved, and smoothed into a valuable structure (we will discuss the value of the misshaped stone in a later piece). You win fans, you make enemies, you build your locus of control from the act of learning and doing.
Presumption and Assumption have no place here.
So...
Yes, of course you cannot and therefore you can't.
...and.
Yes, you will learn so you can.
Your level of suckitude be damned.
Get to it!
